Psychotherapy
I’m Dr. Markus Bidell, a psychotherapist, professor, researcher, clinical supervisor, and consultant in New York City with over 30 years of experience. I work with a diverse range of people dealing with a wide array of psychological, social, health, relational, work/school, and spiritual concerns. I also have experience with addiction and recovery as well as couples and family therapy. I started my career in the height of the AIDS epidemic and I’m uniquely skilled in working with people experiencing health and existential life issues, including working with caregivers and healthcare providers. Perhaps this early clinical work makes me especially skilled at helping people deal with trauma and events that can’t be changed. We can’t alter what happened in the past, but we do have the power to lean into our story and use our insights and experiences to build awareness, foster acceptance, and develop self-compassion, which in turn opens us to living a more empowered, mindful, authentic, and engaged life. Consultation/Education and Research
Consultation/Education
I have over 25 years of experience consulting, teaching and supervising. At the City University of New York Graduate Center, I am part of the doctoral faculty within the clinical neuropsychology program and a professor of counseling at Hunter College. My multiple professional roles and my own life experiences help me see the complexity of our common struggles, and the humanity in our occupational and personal journeys.
Research
I am a national and international researcher focusing on LGBTQ+ health inequalities with an emphasis on clinical competence, cultural humility, and health provider training. I was the 2014-15 Regent’s Fulbright Scholar and developed the LGBT-Development of Clinical Skills Scale (2015) – a healthcare assessment used in national and international research and translated into over a dozen languages. Currently, I am leading an international team of researchers from the USA, Italy, and the UK – we are working on a new LGBTQ+ clinical assessment scale for healthcare providers. My newest interest includes the use of psychedelic assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction.
